Teana Fourie – Founder, Appel ‘n Ui

Our
History

In 2012, when there were very few second-hand online businesses,  two friends and I got together to draw up a business plan to start a new venture – something unique and fresh, unlike the rest out there.

I have always enjoyed snapping things up for a bargain (“appel en ei”) — a characteristic that I inherited from my late father. Appel ’n Ui was born – a tongue in cheek identity for a small furniture business that started trading from my home’s garage in Cape Town.

My gardener joined us on this new venture and became carpenter and painter. Soon, we found ourselves racing around Cape Town, buying up all the inexpensive vintage and mid-century pieces with potential and future appeal we could find. We restored and beautified these pieces and then sold them.

During those first few years of trade, anything that could not walk or talk was in danger of being painted or stripped from all the unsightly varnish of previous eras. As Appel ’n Ui evolved and moved shop across Woodstock, my business partners moved on to pursue other ventures.

During the hard lockdown in 2020, my family and I were blessed to move to the gorgeous Val De Vie Pearl Valley super estate, located in the heart of the Cape Winelands near Paarl. I realised that I could focus on a mainly-online service offering, to bring quality, reputable products and design services to the public (here and elsewhere) at competitive rates.

I would love to meet you – get in touch with me today!
